9/15 Building Your Brand Professional Workshop

This past Thursday, we were excited to host our first ever Professional Workshop with Fisher Investments! Topics included digital personal brands, how to develop your own personal brand, and tips for interviewing and resumes. Read on for a full event recap.





What Is A Brand?

  • Brand - way that an organization or individual is experienced by others

  • Personal brand - widely recognized impression of an individual

    • Can tailor it based on company you are talking to

    • Show what makes you stand out

    • Try to tailor your resume around your personal brand

Trends

  • Employers are decreasing the number of graduate hires faster than the rate at which they are increasing the number of graduate hires

Developing A Personal Brand Statement

  • Develop 1-2 sentences based on your key values and attributes

    • If you are saying what you are, how are you going to show that?

    • If you have a lot of things you feel you could say, you can pick and choose them for different situations

    • You could put this under your name on your resume if you want - serves as a mini cover letter

Professional Tips

  • You don’t want your resume and your LinkedIn to say the same bullet points

  • Handshake is good because it is just for university students

  • In interview, craft your conversation to tell a story instead of a highlight reel

    • Pull from multiple scenarios and not just one

  • Send a follow up email 2 weeks post interview if you haven’t received any communication (this is obviously after the thank you email 24 hours after the interview)
